Joyce Slocum's Letter to WSPR members, 11/4/11

Mon, 11/07/2011 - 13:47 -- WSPR

"I have been looking forward to attending the great sessions on your Fall Conference agenda and to the opportunity to talk with you, and am so disappointed that a confluence of events has made it impossible to be there. I’m grateful that Paul Stankavich has agreed to help me at least share some thoughts with you by way of this letter."

Scott Hanley Receives 2011 PRRO Award

Sat, 09/24/2011 - 16:13 -- WSPR

Scott Hanley, former manager of Pittsburgh’s WDUQ and co-founder of JazzWorks, received the PRRO Award honoring the field’s “unsung heroes.”

Hanley, who left public radio in April to become chief communications officer for the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, was a “Renaissance broadcaster” whose work cut across all the disciplines of public radio — from programming to engineering and fundraising — as well as formats of news, music and public affairs, said Christine Kuzmych, g.m. of Wyoming Public Radio, who presented the award during a July 13 NPR meeting for top station leaders. Kuzmych described Hanley as “an innovator, an instigator and an implementer” who worked to the benefit of the field as a whole.

During his two terms as an NPR Board member director, Hanley served on the Distribution/Interconnection Committee. As committee chair he helped steer the launch of Content Depot.

The PRRO Award honors individuals who deserve recognition for working behind the scenes “to move our industry forward.”

Recipients are chosen by Eastern Region Public Media, Western States Public Radio, Public Radio in Mid-America, and California Public Radio. Instead of plaques, PRRO winners receive vintage radios. Hanley’s PRRO Award was a restored Bendix AM radio dating from 1946 with a built-in loop antenna and sculpted wood cabinet.

Mike Riksen, Vice President for Policy and Representation at NPR, Wins 2010 PRRO Award

Thu, 05/06/2010 - 12:15 -- WSPR

Each year the Public Radio Regional Organizations present the PRRO award to an individual whose work has significantly contributed to the health and growth of Public Radio. The Award is a fully restored and working vintage radio especially selected for its recipient. This year's model is an Emerson 1938 AM radio, with a built-in antenna in a 2-piece wood cabinet.

Not a lot of people know that this year's recipient is a card-carrying HOG - that is, an avid motorcyclist, and a member of the Fairfax chapter of the Harley Owners Group.
